What is activated charcoal?

Activated charcoal is a fine black powder made from bone char, coconut shells, peat, petroleum coke, coal, olive pits, or sawdust. Charcoal is activated by treating it at very high temperatures. The high temperatures alter its internal structure, reducing the size of its pores and increasing its surface area. The result is a charcoal that is more porous than regular charcoal.

Binchotan or white charcoal is a high-quality activated charcoal produced in Japan, in the historical province of Kishu. It is a variety of ash characterized by great hardness, carbonized by a combustion process at a low temperature of 1400 °C (2772 °F).

Due to its unique properties of adsorption, infrared radiation and anion purification, Binchotan has long been used in many areas of daily life in Japan: filtering, water purification, adsorption of harmful gases, high-end fuel, also used in many areas of life in Japan.

The surface of Binchotan is dotted with irregularly distributed pores; this unique porosity is preserved after the charcoal is ground, and is also found in the fibers used for the production of face masks.
