What are Carrageenans?

Carrageenans are natural polysaccharides that make up the cell walls of various red algae and are also composed of sulfated D-galactoses. This matrix of carrageenans and water forms a film-forming gel for better diffusion of active ingredients. They are colorless, odorless, tasteless, and indigestible, and are therefore widely used as thickeners and gelling agents in the food and cosmetics industries.

Red Algae
Red Algae

Red algae has moisturizing properties that make it an interesting facial treatment; it has the ability to retain water in the skin. Rich in antioxidants, it helps fight the loss of skin elasticity and therefore the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, thus constituting a powerful anti-aging treatment. Its enzymes, fatty acids, amino acids, and vitamins also form a real revitalizing cocktail for the skin.

The benefits of red algae:

Improves skin elasticity

Red algae contains carrageenan, as explained earlier, a substance that helps moisturize the skin and activates the synthesis of collagen and elastin. It therefore helps to restart the natural production of hyaluronic acid in the epidermis: fine lines are reduced.

Skin exfoliation

Seaweed is also used for its exfoliating properties. It produces an acid that gently removes dead skin cells, resulting in smoother skin and a brighter complexion.

Reduction of bags under the eyes

Red algae is also used to reduce eye fatigue. Its minerals reduce dark circles by boosting microcirculation. They also help reduce puffiness.

Sun protection

This algae provides effective sun protection and is also widely used in anti-blemish products. Also known for its antioxidant properties, it is often found in hand care products.
