What is sea salt?

Sea salt is a type of salt that comes from the evaporation of sea water. Taste, texture, and processing are what differentiate sea salt from table salt.

Sea salt is generally not or only slightly processed since it comes directly from the evaporation of sea water.

Due to minimal processing, sea salt contains various trace elements such as:

  • Magnesium
  • Calcium
  • Zinc
  • Iron

The medical properties of sea salts:

Salt has been used in medical treatments for thousands of years, dating back to the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians, who used it to treat wounds, skin inflammation, muscle cramps, joint disorders, skin irritations, and mouth sores. In modern medicine, a concentrated form of salt water (a saline solution) is often used in surgery, to clean incisions, in optometry, dentistry, in anti-inflammatory creams and gels, and sometimes also intravenously.

We all know that salt replenishes our sodium intake, which is needed to balance our body's electrolyte levels, maintain body hydration, and control nerve transmission and muscle function.

But we didn't know that it has many health benefits due to its richness in minerals.

Relieves Arthritis : The powerful anti-inflammatory properties of sea salts are key to reducing pain and inflammation in people with arthritis. Several studies have shown that bathing in Dead Sea salts and adding sea salts to your diet have shown remarkable results in reducing pain and inflammation in people with rheumatism and osteoarthritis.

Rejuvenates Skin: Sea salt, when used topically, acts as a natural exfoliant. The high mineral content and anti-inflammatory properties of sea salt are extremely beneficial for acne, psoriasis, eczema, and aging. Try scrubbing your body with a mixture of sea salt, honey, and almond oil to exfoliate dead skin cells, improve blood circulation, boost hydration, and enrich the skin with essential nutrients.

Relieves Stress: Due to the presence of adaptogenic and sedative properties, sea salt actively contributes to the regulation of two hormones in the body (serotonin and melatonin) that help one relax and have a more peaceful sleep. It also plays an important role in mental stability by regulating the stress hormone, namely serotonin, which in turn reduces various symptoms of anxiety, including restlessness, malaise, cold hands and feet, etc. It also provides a feeling of freshness and happiness.

Remedy for Muscle Cramps: Muscle cramps are quite common after an excessive workout due to the loss of electrocytes through sweat. A glass of water infused with a teaspoon of sea salt, taken before going to work out, acts as an electrolyte drink because it balances the electrolyte deficit while keeping you hydrated. This helps prevent both muscle cramps and dehydration.

Soothes sore muscles and stimulates circulation: The benefits of a sea salt bath or applying a sea salt cream or gel include:

  • Stimulate circulation
  • Relieve muscle cramps
  • Helps relieve joint stiffness
  • Soothe sore, overworked legs and feet.

To remember:

Using sea salts not only helps you relax, but it can also:

  • Relieve sore muscles and joints
  • Stimulate circulation
  • Soothe irritated skin
  • Soaking in a sea salt bath before bed can also promote better sleep.
