What are Carrageenans?

Carrageenans are natural polysaccharides that make up the cell walls of various red algae and are also composed of sulfated D-galactoses. This matrix of carrageenans and water forms a film-forming gel for better diffusion of active ingredients. They are colorless, odorless, tasteless, and indigestible, and are therefore widely used as thickeners and gelling agents in the food and cosmetics industries.
